A quick look behind the scenes at TCGSniper

If you noticed TCGSniper wasn’t sending alerts for a period today, I wanted to give you some context on what happened.

TCGPlayer made changes to how its developer API was handling requests, which temporarily affected TCGSniper’s ability to retrieve pricing data. I identified the change, made adjustments to how TCGSniper interacts with the API, and price monitoring is back up and running.

Your alerts and account data were not affected.

A little more context

TCGSniper depends on TCGPlayer’s developer API for pricing data, so changes to that API are something I have to adapt to as they happen. I don't control the API itself, but I do control how TCGSniper responds when things change.

That's an important distinction. Today wasn't a failure of the alert system or your account. It was an upstream change that required an adjustment on my end, and I've made that adjustment.

As TCGPlayer continues evolving its developer platform, I'll keep doing the same thing: monitor what's changing, adapt TCGSniper when necessary, and make sure the service remains something you can rely on.

Why write about it?

Most people don't need to know any of this. You set an alert, walk away, and expect TCGSniper to let you know when the price moves. That's the whole point.

But there are also a lot of people who genuinely enjoy knowing what's happening behind the scenes. I've gotten plenty of messages from users who appreciate being kept in the loop, so I'd rather be transparent about changes like this than quietly fix them and move on.

TCGSniper is still a small project, and when something changes, it's usually me digging through logs, figuring out what happened, and making the fix. I think that's worth sharing with the people who are interested.
